Board Certification and cosmetic societies. Who is a real plastic surgeon?

A woman came in who had a botched breast augmentation. She had three surgeries, with all sorts of issues, reoperations, finally ending in her implants being removed. She was told she was “allergic to gel implants.” She came to me for my opinion. What was done? Who did it? Then she showed me his card.

What is in your herbal medication. Lead? Arsenic? And what does your herbal really do?

The NY Times is a great paper.
They had an article recently on contaminants in herbal medications. As I have blogged about before, herbals ARE medications. The issue with herbals is when people hear “herbal” they think all is safe. Herbal anything sound like butterflies and sunshine with bright blue skies.

How can you avoid bruising with filler injections?

Injections can always cause bruising.  (Sorry. Not to be graphic, but there is no way to put a needle in the skin without getting some blood.)  You don’t have to do these things.  But if you want to stack the deck in your favor against bruising, what can you do to help?

1. What is your training? By what board?  Many people call themselves plastic surgeons and learn to do liposuction in a weekend course.  Some of the laser liposuction companies are targeting non surgeons to buy their machines.

I was checking the news tonight before heading to bed, and saw the Yahoo teaser: America’s most stressful jobs.  Of course, I was curious what were the top ones.  Police? Firefighter? Crab fisherman (it looks really stressful, and wet and cold on those shows)? Mother? (Oh yes.  Being a mom is not a real job…ha

The Capriciousness of Healing

Yes, yes.  I know.  I love those big SAT words.  “The capriciousness of healing….” sounds like it should be a title of a novel.
But I talk about this a lot with my patients prior to surgery.  Surgery is not an exact science.  I measure, and sculpt, and use tiny instruments, and put in many sutures.  But

Patient Choice Award

I have a lot to be thankful for.
I am particularly thankful to be able to do a job I love and live in a part of the country where every woman I meet is great– interesting, insightful, intelligent.  Just great women.
Recently I was told I received the “Patient Choice Award.”  Always curious, and wondering if
