Skin care treatments provide a less invasive way for my Bay Area patients to achieve an improved appearance. Some are simple products which protect the skin and reverse current damage. These products are better than over the counter products bought at department stores. There is a lot of hype in the cosmetic product market. I am particular about what lines and products I carry. For most, I require they show me hard scientific data to prove their claim.
Skin care products take months to show improvement, but they are effective. There are nonsurgical treatments done in my Palo Alto office, many of which have no down time and give immediate results.
Reduce wrinkles with BOTOX,
Improve texture and sun damage with skin care lines like Obagi® and SkinCeuticals,
Fill fine lines of the lips and face and create fuller lips with soft tissue fillers like Collagen, Cosmoplast, Juvederm, Restalyne, Perlane, and Sculptra,
Resurface the skin with chemical peels like the Obagi® TCA Blue Peel.
Skin care should start before the signs of damage are evident. We in the Bay Area are exposed to the sun and elements constantly – driving to and from work, lunchtime outside in sunny Palo Alto. I usually recommend a skin care program to people in their 30s or older. Benefits are seen at any age.
I consider the basic tenets of skin care:
* exfoliate.
* protect.
* reverse sun damage and aging of the skin.
Sunscreen helps prevent getting further sun damage. Living in California, we have exposure to the sun all year. Sunscreen shouldn’t be just for the beach. You should wear SPF 15 or higher as part of your daily routine. Sun damage is a primary contributor to skin aging and cancers. I like the clear zinc blockers, as they provide mechanical protection against the sun. They are effective, and I feel the zinc sunblocks are safer for pregnant women and children than chemical sunblocks.
