Celebrex …. pros and cons. Nonopioid pain control after surgery

Just a quick update (yes, I am stuck in the rabbit hole of trying to find non-narcotic options for pain control after surgery.). I keep wondering why I was reading all of these studies from 2007 saying how great it was, but I couldn’t figure out why we as plastic surgeons aren’t using it all the time.

First finding: Celebrex just came off patent. Cost may be a big reason why we weren’t using it. The FDA approved the First Generic Versions of Celebrex. So now Celecoxib is available, the generic version of Celebrex.

Seconding finding: There are concerns about side effects, particularly at higher doses. When reading the articles on the controversy, I found many tidbits. Canada recommends doses 200mg a day or lower, but they did not ban the drug as they feel the “benefits outweigh the risks.” They recommend not using it for people with a history of cardiac issues.
