Right time to do a facelift? Journal time!

Posted on November 19, 2021

Quick abstract in the latest issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, November 2021, “Facial Aging Surgery: Healing time, Duration Over the Years, and the Right Time to Perform a Facelift.”

Abstract? They were trying to decide when is the best time to do facial surgery? They looked at length of recovery, returning to work, how long the results last, and the ideal age to undergo the surgery.

Study: They did a 35 year observational study of 9313 patients. They divided into two subgroups: The eye (brow lift, eyelid surgery and midface) and the lower face/ neck area. Follow ups were done at 5, 10 and 20 years. They looked at recovery, satisfaction and stability of the results.

Findings?

There was relatively rapid recovery and positive results were stable up to 10 years after surgery. Patients satisfaction remained high even after 20 years.

My thoughts?

They didn’t have a specific age they advocated for. I would say when you *need* the surgery is different for the eye area vs. the face. Eyelid surgery is usually needed in the 40s/early 50s, and neck / facelift surgery in the mid 50s to early 60s. They also did not include fat transfer in the algorithm.

But the “lasting” satisfaction for 10-20 years is great, and I think their point is to do surgery when you need it, as opposed to waiting til you are old.
