Do breast implants prevent breast feeding?? Journal time!

Posted on September 5, 2019

For young women wanting breast augmentation who want to breast feed children in the future, the question has always been out there. Will I be able to breast feed?

To answer questions like these, you need big studies with big data.

Aesthetic Surgery Journal August 2019, “Lactation Outcomes in More Than 3500 Women Following Primary Augmentation: 5 Year Data from the Breast Implant Follow Up Study.”

This was part of a 10 year observational study looking at the safety of Natrelle round silicone gel filled breast implants.  A total of 4679 subjects gave birth at least once after their primary breast augmentation, for a total of 5736 live births.  (silicone gel 3695, saline 2041).

Conclusion?

Most were able to breast feed their infants without complications. Lactation complications were comparable between the silicone and saline groups, and the incidence was comparable to reports in the general population of women who breast feed.
