Bridalplasty. A new low.

Brides-to-be compete in challenges to earn plastic-surgery procedures in a quest to win their ultimate dream wedding.

Quick post today. This is a busy time of year for most plastic surgeons, so I don’t have a lot of time to write.  I was just flipping through my Plastic Surgery News magazine and saw an article on this. I love their article’s first line: ” The list of cringe- inducing reality TV shows continues to grow.”

The Bridalplasty show pits women against each other in weekly challenges and the winner gets all of the plastic surgery procedures on her wishlist.  She will reveal them to her groom to be at the altar.

I would like to give the E! channel an E for EEEEK.  Plastic surgery should be a well thought out decision.  It should be a process of figuring out what you want, what is realistic, and what it would mean for you emotionally.  Changing your appearance will affect you.  Some surgeries have tough recoveries.  Many of these programs do so many surgeries I can’t recognize the women afterwards.  (Is it that these women are really different from my patient base and want to look so different? Does the whole world have to have eyebrows which touch the sky at age 30 and be a DD to survive? )

I tend to find women who really want to change their looks drastically are the ones who should not have plastic surgery.  They need to work on their self esteem and who they are first.  I don’t think these publicized shows which amp up people’s competitive edge are a good environment to make decisions about what to do to your body.

Supposedly in the works in an unnamed network is another show. “Mistress Makeover: starting over,” wherein the women who’ve had alleged illicit affairs with celebrities will undergo procedures.

When will the craziness end?
